Via the Royal Bridge and Palazzo San Giorgio a brief history
Palazzo San Giorgio Built in 1260 by order of the Captain of the People Guglielmo Boccanegra is also called Palazzo delle Compere di San Giorgio, it is one of the most important and well-known historic buildings in Genoa. Typical example of medieval civil architecture, it is located in Caricamento, in the center of the medieval arch of the ancient port recovered to the city in the nineties, it was the original head office of the Banco di San Giorgio. The palace was the first to have a purely public character in a city, but for only two years, until when, in 1262, Boccanegra himself was deposed and forced into exile. He saw Marco Polo, a prisoner of the Republic of Genoa, imprisoned in his prisons. During the period of detention the Venetian navigator dictated to Rustichello from Pisa his travel memories which were later published under the title the million.
